Preserving the Past for Future Generations

Tow Law History Group was formed in 1989 by members of an evening class organised by W.E.A. (Workers Education Association).

We meet in the Church Hall of St. Phillip & James, Church Lane, Tow Law.

Our Meeting are held every fortnightly on Monday nights at 7.00pm, although this is sometimes not possible because other activities take precedence.

We are a small working group who research and actively support other community projects: giving talks to schools, church groups, or slide shows from our extensive collection of photographs.

Over the past 10 years we have produced a number of publications – The Stargazer of Tow Law, Whence and Whither, Memoirs of Tow Law, Tow Law 150th Year Celebration Book (photographs), plus a video "Memories of Tow Law" and now our latest book LOOKING BACK.

We draw our membership not only from Tow Law but also from an area stretching from Durham to Stanhope. We even have two members in America.

The area we cover now extends from Tow Law in the west through the Deerness Valley to Ushaw Moor and New Brancepeth in the east.

Our group is completely independent with its own constitution and we rely solely on our member’s efforts to finance our projects.

We are actively involved in The Weardale Society and Durham County Council’s "Yesterday Belongs To You" project.
